Hard to be a player

There is nothing better than the infatuation of new love and Carly Whitten (Carmen Diaz) found it in her prince charming Mark King (Nikolaj Coaster- Waldau). She is so into him and even decided to be exclusive, well as exclusive as she can be. After he cancels on a date, she decides to surprise him and makes an unplanned visit to his home. There, to her surprise she discovers his wife and his whole secret personal. This movie is funny, and it reminds you nothing worse than a scorn woman. The mistress, the wife, and another discovered mistress plan a plot to get even and make this two time cheat learn his lesson. Nicki Minaj makes an appearance as the assistant to Carly, but her biggest asset is her round figure. A funny story line but not one to use on a first date or a relationship that does not have solid footing as it might add fodder to the doubts. Either way, the truth always comes out and it hard to be a player.

It was a great screen play. Good acting. Overall a very enjoyable film. It had everything for everyone in the family. Action, romance, and comedy. Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell have perfect chemistry. It was an amazing movie I highly recommend it. It had the perfect combination of heartfelt love and on the edge of your seat suspense. I loved it. The writer and rector have done an amazing job on this movie. I would give it a 10/10 any day of the week. I highly recommend it. There was some cursing and some people get killed very visibly on the screen. I recommend it for ages 14 plus. I believe that it was one of the best acting jobs ever by Anna Kendrick. It was a great movie probably one of the movies of the year by far. I highly recommend this movie.

An Absurdist Screwball Comedy
31 July 2015 | by  (Australia) – See all my reviews
The Lobster is a surreal deadpan comedy about the strangeness of social pressures and modern relationships.

The setting is a bleak, tightly controlled hotel on the coast of Ireland. David (Colin Farrell), a recently divorced Architect, is given 40 days to find a partner or else be transformed into an animal of his choosing; in this case, a lobster. Sound strange? That's just the first 10 minutes. Guests of the hotel are subjected to routine trips to shoot 'loners' with tranquillisers, and awkward high-school dances to entice singles to mingle. As David's days start running out, he decides to feign common interest with a heartless woman in order to escape his fate. But can he pull it off?

Farrell really hits the mark with this role, displaying awkward machismo and fragile humility in equal measure. His comedic timing is matched only by his supporting cast that includes John C. Reilly, Ashley Jensen, and Olivia Coleman. Rachel Weisz is also spot-on as the short-sighted woman.

The Lobster has just about everything you'd want from a film. It's unpredictable, it's offbeat, and it's laugh-out-loud funny. But it's most impressive feature is the subtext - it manages to reflect how odd our own modern-day social pressures are. How loneliness is feared, how individuality loses out to the mainstream system, and how relationships have to be deemed 'legitimate' by some higher order. There's plenty to talk about with this film, and I'll definitely be seeing it again to delve a little deeper....

Exceptional and exquisite, go far and near to see it
27 May 2015 | by  (Toledo, Ohio) – See all my reviews
Our tale is set in 1870's England, as imagined by the classic author Thomas Hardy's book of the same title. Far from London, in the western countryside, lives a capable shepherd, Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenhart) who has managed to save enough to rent his farm and buy his sheep. One fateful day, Oak spies a beautiful maiden, Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan) on horseback. This maiden, an orphan, has come to stay with her aunt and labor hard in her nearby farm. Smitten almost at once, Gabriel soon proposes to Bathsheba, promising a good life and a "piano". Alas, she turns him down, despite his great looks and manner. She declares she is not ready to be any man's property. Soon after, their fortunes are reversed. Gabriel loses his flock tragically, because of an over-zealous sheepdog. After selling everything he owns, he must vacate his house and look for work. Meanwhile, Bathsheba inherits a farm from her uncle and decides to run the place herself. It has a large beautiful house and successful fields. Amazingly, Gabriel comes by, helps put out a fire, and is hired as her shepherd. However, he is keenly aware that, because of his poverty, Bathsheba may never look his way again. There's more. B suddenly gets two more suitors. One is a neighboring, rich, confirmed bachelor, Mr. Boldwood (Michael Sheen), whose heart was broken long ago. That is, until Miss Everdene arrives and impetuously sends him a valentine. Not long after, a redcoat soldier, Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge) meets Bathsheba in the woods and becomes strongly attracted to this independent woman and, alas for Gabriel, visa versa. Who will, if any, our headstrong heroine choose? This film could hardly be more exceptional or exquisite. The cast is superb, starting with Mulligan and Schoenharts, and continuing down to the smallest role. Then, the story is a heart touching masterpiece, as Hardy put down on paper, and this film brings to a wider audience. Add on glorious scenery, beautiful costumes, and a superb direction and the film watching world is enthralled. This reviewer knows it will be the best film she will see all year and, as soon as it is released on DVD, will be first in line. So, movie fans will be well advised to go far and near to garner a cinema seat.

Ex Machina:Reviews

Very involving bit of pure sci-fi
25 January 2015 | by  (Edinburgh, Scotland, UK) – See all my reviews
A reclusive CEO of a leading technology company hires a young whiz kid who works for him to test his latest development, a highly advanced android called Ava. Specifically he is tasked with using the Turing test on her to establish if her AI is sufficiently convincing to pass as human.

Despite contributing several scripts for the screen, this is writer Alex Garland's first directorial effort. It's a hard sci-fi movie which examines concepts and ideas above everything else. That's not to say it isn't dramatic or even thrilling because it is both of those things as well but the focus is squarely on the science fiction speculation, and this is a very welcome thing. The central concept that it examines is artificial intelligence. How we interact with AI as humans, as well as how a seductive machine could in turn manipulate us. The very well written script poses philosophical questions such as is there moral or immoral ways to treat AI. It also considers if sometimes part of being human is that we sometimes subconsciously want to be fooled by an illusion, if it is attractive enough.

In many ways Ex Machina resembles last years Under the Skin. Both feature highly advanced female non-humans. In the earlier film Scarlett Johansson played an alien, here Alicia Vikander plays an android. While the very small cast all acquit themselves very well, it is Vikander who stands out in the film's most challenging role. It's a nuanced performance that captures the fine balance between the human-like and machine. Not only this but the marvellous special effects compliment this performance to create a very distinctive character. Aside from the effects, this is probably quite a modestly budgeted film, as the small little-known cast and limited sets suggest. But these restrictions have been used to the films advantage, as the unknown cast surprise more given little is known of them and the restricted setting gives off a claustrophobic feel which works well, while forcing us to focus in even more on the ideas being put in front of us. A scene setting ambient soundtrack additionally creates just the right off-kilter mood to accentuate the events. But it's ultimately the very good writing that underpins the success of this film. All-in-all, very impressive science fiction for those who appreciate the genre's more cerebral side.

The Most Anti-"Game of Thrones" Movie Off All Time
28 June 2015 | by  (Lithuania) – See all my reviews
Greetings from Lithuania.

Please don't get me wrong - i love "Game of Thrones", but this movie has to be the most opposite version of "Game of Thrones" out there.

"Cinderella" (2015) is superbly made movie for a whole family (young females especially). It tells well known story, and it doesn't re-imagine it nor it's a reboot of remake of it - it is superbly made retelling of this fairy tale. This has to be one of the most "cheezee" and beautifully made movies of all time.

Set design, costumes, music is all Oscar worthy. Cienamtography is gorgeous and acting is solid for this material - there are many well known faces doing their good jobs. Pacing of this movie excellent, at running time 1 h 39 min this movie barely drags and is entertaining from start till finish.

Overall, on one hand "Cinderella" is probably the most cliché and cheeze movie ever made but one the other hand so was this fairy tale and this 2015 live version adaptation is just retelling this tale and at the same time it does so very well - it looks beautifully, it's involving and it's craftsmanship is superb.

John Wick:Reviews

Story: 3 minutes; Entertainment: 101 minutes.
17 January 2015 | by  (Netherlands) – See all my reviews
It looks as if the filmmakers realized that the public was sick of certain movies. Most movies nowadays are full of wire work, sci-fi, etc. often topped with icing made of needless or predictable background stories that add nothing. For example the beautiful girlfriend who gives the moral speeches or the troubled teenage daughter, who aren't present here.

Nothing of that is in John Wick. John Wick adds hardly a story, no character development, no needless character or background, no misplaced drama, no misplaced humor and not too much eye candy, nothing of that. What John Wick offers is action, action and more action. In fact, it is one long action scene, with some lines and close ups added. But that is not a problem. The directors promise action and deliver. While delivering they made it look good and convincing, without trying to be more, and they're smart enough to give the movie a satisfying beginning and ending.

And for those who claim that Keanu Reeves is a horrible actor..... you are right. But his blank expression is perfect for this movie. Leave the acting to the bad guys and the delicious guest part for Willem Dafoe.

If you're tired of movies with forced drama or loaded with CGI, John Wick will be a pleasant wake-up call.
